“The Muiraquitã is a jade or nephrite artifact, often carved in the shape of a frog, also found in the shape of a turtle or other animals. It is found mainly on the banks of the Tapajós River, in the Brazilian Amazon. The indigenous people of the region attribute magical and healing properties to Muiraquitã, considering it a powerful amulet of luck and protection.” - FeitoBrasil.com
My main inspiration for this design is the Muiraquitã, it’s a pendant I wear everyday as a reminder of my home, Brazil. I wanted the Muiraquitã (frog) to be less stylized, but to keep its meaning of luck and protection, I added four-leaved clovers. The sun, moon -my go-to doodles- and Cassiopeia constellation, are inspired by the style of tarot card illustrations. If you really want to assign meaning, those can signify the mysticism and healing properties associated with the traditional figure.
